On November 11, 2021, at the Serbian Military Cemetery in Sofia, a commemoration ceremony was organized on the occasion of the Armistice Day in WWI. The ceremony and the laying of wreaths was attended by the highest representatives of the Army of the Republic of Bulgaria (including the Chief of Defense BA), military envoys accredited to the Republic of Bulgaria, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, and a large number of the representatives of the diplomatic corps as well as Serbian citizens who live and work in Bulgaria.
Ambassador Željko Jović welcomed the present guests, thanked them for coming on this very important day for the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian people, to pay tribute to "all Serbian victims and Serbian soldiers who were killed and who died in the fight for freedom, justice and for those values on which modern Europe rests today. "
The Ambassador reminded that the Republic of Serbia had gone through terrible war destruction and suffering in that period, and that 1.247.435 people lost their lives during the war, 1/3 of the total population, or about 62% of the male population. As the Ambassador further stated, "these are the reasons why Serbia and the Serbian people know very well the price of freedom, as well as the consequences of the war destruction and the suffering that war brings." That is why, according to him, "Serbia today is fully committed to peace, friendly and good neighborly relations." Ambassador Jović further pointed out that the Serbian military cemetery, as well as other military cemeteries located in Sofia (British, French, Italian and German) are great places to remember not only on this day, but on all other days of the year, the horrors of war, and all the suffering that war causes. On this day, Ambassador said, that it is necessary to understand the importance of gathering together around one key idea, the idea of resolving conflicts and all our misunderstandings in a peaceful way. In his conclusion, he noted that he hopes that today we will all go to our homes with good faith, with faith and hope for a common and better future, with faith in humanity, morality and solidarity, "which is especially important today, when we face an invisible but very strong enemy, which is a threat to all of us."
